Thyroid Function Self-Test Sometimes, vague symptoms such as fatigue, feeling cold, weight gain or changes in mood can be difficult to place. The Thyroid Function Self-Test is designed to offer a first indication of whether there may be signs of an underactive thyroid. This self-test is intended for home use and detects increased TSH, thyroid stimulating hormone, in a finger-prick whole blood sample. A TSH level above the test’s reference value of 5 µIU/mL may be associated with possible hypothyroidism, also known as an underactive thyroid. The test may be relevant if you experience symptoms commonly associated with hypothyroidism, such as tiredness, feeling cold, weight gain, dry skin, brittle hair, constipation, forgetfulness, low mood or menstrual irregularities in women. The Thyroid Function Self-Test is a manual qualitative immunochromatographic self-test for the detection of increased TSH levels. It is intended as a screening test for self-testing at home and can help you decide whether it may be wise to consult a doctor for further evaluation. How the test works Wash and dry your hands thoroughly. Prepare the test device, pipette and lancet, then clean the tip of your middle or ring finger with cotton moistened with 70% alcohol or an alcohol pad. Rub the finger towards the tip for 10 to 15 seconds and use the lancet on the side of the fingertip. Massage the fingertip to obtain a sufficient blood sample. Without pressing the pipette bulb, hold the pipette against the blood until it fills to the marked line. Avoid air bubbles where possible. Transfer the collected blood into the sample well by pressing the pipette bulb. Wait 30 to 40 seconds for the blood to be absorbed. Hold the diluent bottle vertically and slowly add exactly 4 drops to the sample well, leaving 2 to 3 seconds between each drop. Positive: Two coloured lines appear in the result window under the T and C marks. This indicates that the TSH level is higher than the reference value of 5 µIU/mL. The intensity of the T line does not affect the interpretation. Even a faint but complete T line should be considered positive. Negative: Only one coloured line appears under the C mark. This means that the TSH level is below 5 µIU/mL and within the normal range. Invalid: No line appears under the C mark. The result cannot be interpreted. Repeat the procedure using a new Thyroid Function Self-Test and a new blood sample. The result should be read after 10 minutes and should not be interpreted after 15 minutes. Reliability The test has been compared with reference methods and showed an overall agreement of more than 99.2%, with a 95% confidence interval of 95.2% to 100.0%. As with any screening test, false positive or false negative results can occur. The result may be incorrect if the test becomes wet before use, if the amount of blood added to the sample well is incorrect or if the instructions are not followed carefully. In early pregnancy, TSH levels are generally lower, which may cause the result to be underestimated. If the result is positive, it is recommended to consult a doctor. If the result is negative but symptoms persist, consulting a doctor is also advisable. Important to know before use This self-test is intended to support the detection of possible hypothyroidism only. It is not intended to diagnose other thyroid disorders and does not replace professional medical advice or laboratory testing. Do not perform the test if you are undergoing hormonal medical treatment for a thyroid condition. The test is not intended for children under 2 years old. The test can be used at any time of the day.
